SliceAI: Your Legal Expert Agent

SliceAI isn't an add-on chatbot. It's built directly into the platform to reason like in-house counsel, asking the right questions and tracing every answer back to a trusted source.

Key Takeaways

  • SliceAI is one agent that wears three hats - Finance, Legal, and HR. This piece looks at what happens when you call on the legal expert
  • SliceAI does the same due diligence a world-class lawyer does: asking the right questions before answering, cross-referencing rules across jurisdictions, and knowing when to escalate to a user.
  • Every answer traces back to Slice's knowledge base, trained on endless hours of real legal, tax, and accounting work by the best in the business, not scraped from the open internet.
  • SliceAI doesn't stop at flagging a problem. It tells you what to do next, and carries out the next step inside Slice. It's not a system of records. It's a system of action.
  • SliceAI is built directly into the platform, not connected through an external AI tool via MCP. It lives inside your data with full context, so every answer reflects what's actually true, live.

Somewhere on an equity or legal team right now, someone is staring at a question they cannot immediately answer: does this relocation change a filing deadline, is this grant still compliant, what happens if these options vest after an employee has moved countries. The fastest tool within reach is often a general-purpose AI chatbot, the kind built to be a jack of all trades and master of none. A few numbers get copied out of the cap table, pasted in, and back comes an answer that sounds confident. It might be right, but it's just as likely working off a small snippet, not the full picture of your company. Nobody on that thread actually knows.

That is the gap SliceAI was built to close. Not by adding a chatbot next to the equity platform, but by building the agent directly into it, so the intelligence lives where the data lives. Legal is one of three hats that agent wears, alongside Finance and HR - this piece is about what happens when you call on the legal one

Slice’s Legal Expert Agent, Not a Copilot

SliceAI is not an assistant sitting off to the side, waiting to be asked. It is built into Slice the way in-house counsel is built into a company: someone your team already knows, who already has access to all your real records, at all times, and whose answers you can trace back to a source you trust. That distinction matters, because it changes what you can actually do with the answer. A copilot suggests. Counsel advises, and stands behind the advice.

Why We Built It

Equity, tax, and compliance decisions are too high-stakes for guesswork. One missed 83(b) window, one stale fair market value, one overlooked Section 102 requirement, and a company or its employees are carrying real exposure, often across more than one jurisdiction at once. The old workflow made that worse: search, export, copy, paste, hope, or connect an MCP to an AI that wasn't built for this, pulling data out of the platform built to manage it and into a process that has no idea what any of it actually means.

Built From Day One, Not Bolted On Later

AI-native isn't a feature added after the fact. It's an architecture decision made on day one, and Slice was built that way from the start, unlike platforms that bolt AI onto an existing system later. The data model, the permission system, and the compliance engine were designed from day one to support an agent that could act, not just answer.

This is also why it never becomes a new thing to secure or govern: SliceAI gives every user the maximum access their permissions grant them, and no more, never surfacing data their permissions already block them from seeing. It works from live data instead of a stale export, and reasons using the platform's actual data model rather than reconstructing a cap table from an exported document.

It Thinks Like a Lawyer, Because Part of It Is

Good lawyers do not answer until they have all the facts. In an early demo of SliceAI, an engineer's relocation case came in with a few real-world complications: the move was to Quebec, and the employment ran through a PEO. Rather than guessing at the details, SliceAI asked what a careful associate would ask: who is relocating, when did or will the move happen, where exactly are they moving to, and what type of relocation is it.

That instinct to ask matters as much as what SliceAI already knows: the value isn't the answer a generic AI tool hands back, it's uncovering what you didn't know to ask, and the information you didn't think to provide.

Equity questions are rarely standalone. A tax attorney weighing a grant considers withholding rules, treaty implications, and filing deadlines together, because the rules interact with each other. SliceAI works the same way: consider an employee in the UK holding options under an EMI scheme who relocates to Germany mid-vesting. A system of record would just show the grant still vesting on schedule; it has no way of knowing the relocation matters. SliceAI recognizes that the move is a disqualifying event for the options' tax-advantaged status, surfaces what needs to happen next, and labels it urgently, not as a routine employee-record-updated note, but as a compliance issue with a real deadline attached.

SliceAI also shows its work: the underlying rule comes from a deterministic compliance engine, and the language model only interprets the question and explains the result, never inventing the rule underneath it. And like good counsel, it knows the line between what it can resolve and what needs a human sign-off, flagging what needs to go to someone else rather than pushing every decision through automatically.

A Source of Truth You Can Actually Trust

The reasoning behind every SliceAI answer draws on a knowledge base that is proprietary and continuously maintained by Slice's in-house legal, tax, and compliance team, working alongside the top-tier law firms who are also our partners and investors globally. It is not scraped from the open internet or approximated from public legal text, and it is never static: that same team keeps feeding what they learn back into the knowledge base and the compliance engine, so the source SliceAI draws from keeps improving rather than slowly drifting out of date the way a model trained once and left alone would. With a generic AI chat, there is no way to know what a response is actually based on or how current it is. With SliceAI, every answer traces back to a maintained, expert-vetted source, the same team responsible for keeping the platform's compliance logic correct in the first place.

SliceAI vs. the Alternatives

Every alternative to SliceAI quietly hands the risk back to the customer: a wrong answer that sounds confident, a compliance issue that surfaces too late, or exposure nobody flagged in time. Without any AI at all, every question depends on someone remembering to ask the right person or dig through spreadsheets and PDFs. A generic AI tool means starting over every session and reasoning from what was typed rather than what is actually true in the live environment. And connecting an outside AI tool through an MCP integration is still a bridge, not a foundation: the AI still reasons from data relayed across an API rather than the platform's real data model, with a new integration point to secure and its own risk of drifting out of sync with what a user is actually allowed to see. In every case, the part that is supposed to be certain, the actual compliance rule, ends up running on the same probabilistic model doing the explaining, which is exactly where hallucinated citations and invented data creep into decisions that matter.

Why It Matters for Your Team

SliceAI does not stop at telling you that something needs attention. It surfaces the next action: file this, request that missing data point, review this before the deadline, so an alert is a starting point rather than a dead end. It makes the platform itself feel frictionless, moving your team through the right actions and pages instead of leaving them to hunt for the right screen. And because the same agent that answers the question can also carry out the next step, from building a grant to routing an approval to generating an award letter, it becomes a system actually watching a company's equity, tax, and compliance posture across every country it operates in, live. It's the expert agent that lives in the data, not next to it.

That is the difference between an assistant and counsel. Book a demo to see what it looks like when your equity platform can actually think it through with you.
